Historical Context: On December 7, 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and with the outbreak of World War II, the Japanese in Sacramento as well as in other places felt the immediate impact of the war. One Japanese resident recalled, "that night the FBI picked up Mr. Aoki, Mr. Ishizaki, and Mr. Itano, who were the backbone of the local Japanese community and our church. The following morning, Monday, when I went to the church, I noticed a large inscription, 'down with Japs' on the front wall. I felt quite uneasy."
